What Is Day Treatment?

Day Treatment is a higher level of outpatient care for adults who need more frequent treatment than traditional outpatient services can provide. The program is sometimes referred to as a partial hospitalization program or PHP.

Rather than spending the day and night in a residential facility, clients participate in scheduled therapy, clinical services, educational activities, and other treatment programming before returning home. This arrangement can be helpful for people who need substantial clinical care but do not require 24/7 supervision.

For those looking into partial hospitalization programs in Massachusetts, day treatment can offer an intensive treatment experience while maintaining a connection to home life and everyday responsibilities.

Our Day Treatment Program Near Boston

Our day treatment program near Boston brings together addiction treatment and mental health care for adults who need a more intensive setting than standard outpatient treatment. Located in Newton, Massachusetts, our program is convenient for people throughout Greater Boston and surrounding communities. Treatment can address drug and alcohol use as well as co-occurring mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and PTSD, allowing both substance use and related emotional challenges to be addressed as part of the same comprehensive care. Each client begins with an assessment so the treatment team can better understand their circumstances and determine which services will fit their situation best.

What to Expect During Day Treatment

Day treatment involves regular participation throughout the week, with time devoted to different aspects of recovery.

While schedules can vary based on clinical needs, day treatment (also called partial hospitalization) programs in Massachusetts may include:

  • Individual Therapy: Private sessions focused on personal concerns, treatment goals, behaviors, and emotional health.
  • Peer Settings: Opportunities to learn from others, discuss challenges, and practice healthier ways of responding.
  • Clinical Assessments: Ongoing evaluation of progress, symptoms, substance use, and changing treatment needs.
  • Educational Sessions: Information about addiction, mental health, coping strategies, relapse prevention, and recovery.
  • Holistic Activities: Options such as yoga, meditation, art, music, movement, or other wellness-focused activities.
  • Medication Services: When appropriate, medication management or medication-assisted treatment may be incorporated into treatment.

The goal is not simply to fill the day with appointments. Each part of treatment serves a purpose, giving clients opportunities to examine what has been happening and practice different ways of handling it.

Substance Use and Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Addiction does not always occur on its own. Some adults entering treatment are also dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, or another mental health concern. When substance use and mental health conditions occur together, addressing only one issue may leave important parts of the situation unresolved.

Our day treatment can address both areas within the same nurturing setting. Services may include therapy for substance use, trauma-focused care, medication-assisted treatment when appropriate, and therapeutic approaches designed to address emotional and behavioral concerns. Treating co-occurring concerns together can help clients develop a more complete understanding of what contributes to substance use and what may help them move forward successfully.

Therapies Used in Day Treatment

Our treatment draws from several evidence-based approaches, with services selected according to each client’s clinical needs. Their treatment plan is crafted after an extensive evaluation and can be adjusted when necessary.

Therapies and treatment options may include:

CBT examines the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

A type of cognitive therapy, DBT teaches practical skills for managing emotions, relationships, and difficult situations.

This helps clients recognize difficult experiences while making choices consistent with their values.

The goal is to address the effects of traumatic experiences in a safe and secure therapeutic setting.

Psychoeducational Therapy:

This type of therapy provides information that can help clients better understand addiction and mental health.

Individual and Group Counseling:

These services create space for personal work as well as shared learning.

These aim to heal the body, soul, and mind and may include yoga, meditation, music therapy, art therapy, acupuncture, Reiki, movement, and fitness and nutrition activities.

Who Is Day Treatment Right For?

PHP Boston is not the right fit for every person. The appropriate level of care depends on factors such as symptoms, substance use, safety concerns, living circumstances, and previous treatment experiences.

It may be appropriate for adults who:

  • Need more treatment than weekly outpatient appointments can provide
  • Are experiencing significant substance use or mental health concerns
  • Have a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder
  • Have completed a more intensive level of care and need continued treatment
  • Can safely live outside a 24-hour treatment setting
  • Want intensive clinical care while remaining connected to home

Day Treatment vs. IOP

Day treatment and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) both provide treatment without requiring clients to live at the facility, but they differ in intensity. Day treatment generally involves more frequent and comprehensive programming, making it appropriate for people who need a greater amount of clinical care during the week. IOP offers more flexibility and can be a better fit for someone who is stable enough to spend more time managing responsibilities outside of treatment.

Additionally, the level sometimes referred to as IOP may be offered under the name partial day treatment. The names can be confusing, which is why an assessment is important when determining the most appropriate option for you or your loved one.

There is no single length of stay that applies to everyone. The amount of time a person participates in day treatment depends on their needs, progress, treatment goals, and recommendations from the clinical team. Some clients may eventually transition to a less intensive program as their circumstances change. Others may need additional time before moving to the next stage of care. Treatment is evaluated throughout the process rather than based on a predetermined timeline.

Due to the Parity Act, many insurance plans provide coverage for addiction and mental health treatment. However, benefits, deductibles, copays, and authorization requirements vary by plan. Newton Recovery Center works with most insurance plans and can help verify benefits before treatment begins. Checking coverage in advance can give you a better understanding of your potential out-of-pocket costs and what your plan may cover.

Insurance Accepted at Newton Recovery Center

Newton Recovery Center works with many major insurance plans, including Aetna, TRICARE, Carelon, Magellan, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Our admissions team will verify your benefits for free and walk you through your coverage before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Day Treatment the same as PHP?

Day treatment is sometimes referred to as a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Both describe an intensive level of outpatient treatment in which clients participate in substantial clinical programming during the day but return home rather than living at the facility.

Yes. Day treatment does not require clients to live at the treatment center. Clients attend scheduled programming during the day and return home afterward, provided their living situation is appropriate for this level of care.

Day treatment requires a significant time commitment, so maintaining a full work schedule may be difficult. Depending on the schedule and your circumstances, some people may be able to work reduced hours or make other arrangements.

Are there Partial Hospitalization Programs in Massachusetts?

Yes. Partial hospitalization programs are available in Massachusetts. Day treatment is one term used to describe this type of comprehensive outpatient care.

The daily schedule can vary based on the program and a client’s treatment needs. Your treatment team can explain the expected schedule, attendance requirements, and weekly programming before you begin.

Not necessarily. Detox needs depend on the substance involved, the severity of use, withdrawal risks, and your medical needs. If medically supervised detox is necessary, it should generally be completed before entering a PHP.

This place was an amazing time I was here for two weeks, the only complaint I have is that dinner was not very good, breakfast and lunch was typically amazing. They have their own food truck, mental health groups were small sizes and personalized to your needs.

The Recovery Team (TRT) is a great place overall. It is what you make of it. You put in the work the place will put back into you. Patience is a key to success at TRT. Lean on the staff. They will go out their way their way for you if you go out the way for yourself. Be sure to make sure you get everything in writing from admissions. Admissions will over sale. But when you walk into the place it will take some adjustments but it can feel like home. Good luck to you in your recovery.
