What Is Alcohol Use Disorder?

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a medical condition involving difficulty controlling or stopping alcohol use despite experiencing negative consequences. It can range from mild to severe and is not simply a matter of how often someone drinks. A person may have an alcohol use disorder if drinking has become difficult to control, occupies a significant amount of their time and attention, or continues despite problems involving their health, relationships, work, responsibilities, or emotional wellness.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol addiction does not always look the way people expect. Someone can maintain a job, care for their family, and appear to have things under control while privately struggling with drinking.

Some possible signs include:

  • Drinking more or for longer than you originally intended
  • Trying to cut back or stop but finding that you cannot
  • Spending significant time obtaining alcohol, drinking, or recovering from its effects
  • Experiencing strong cravings or feeling preoccupied with drinking
  • Needing more alcohol to experience the same effects
  • Continuing to drink despite problems with relationships, work, school, or other responsibilities
  • Giving up activities or spending less time with people because of alcohol
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you stop or reduce your drinking
  • Drinking in situations where it creates a safety risk
  • Continuing to drink even when you know it is affecting your physical or mental health

Furthermore, binge drinking is one pattern of excessive alcohol use that can increase the risk of alcohol-related health problems and alcohol use disorder. According to the CDC, Massachusetts adults who binge drink reported a median of almost two binge-drinking occasions in the previous 30 days in 2022, with the highest-frequency binge drinkers reporting at leat four occasions.

When to Seek Professional Alcohol Treatment

It can be difficult to decide when drinking has crossed the line from something concerning to something that warrants professional treatment. You may have wondered about getting help several times and then talked yourself out of it because things do not seem “bad enough.” Asking for an assessment does not commit you to a particular program. It can simply give you a better understanding of what is happening and what options are available.

Consider reaching out if:

  • You repeatedly promise yourself that you will drink less but return to the same pattern
  • Alcohol is affecting your relationships or responsibilities
  • You regularly drink to cope with stress, anxiety, sadness, or other emotions
  • You are hiding how much you drink from people close to you
  • You experience cravings that are difficult to ignore
  • You have experienced consequences related to drinking but continue to use alcohol
  • You are worried about what will happen if you try to stop
  • Your drinking has become a source of shame, conflict, or worry
  • You feel that alcohol is taking up more of your life than you want it to

Our Alcohol Rehab Programs Near Boston

Recovery does not always require stepping away from your entire life. Newton Recovery Center offers several levels of alcohol treatment near Boston, allowing adults to receive care that corresponds with the severity of their symptoms and their ability to function outside treatment.

Day Treatment

Day treatment is designed for adults who need frequent clinical care but may not require round-the-clock residential treatment. Much of the day is devoted to therapy and other treatment services, giving you more opportunities to work through the issues surrounding alcohol use and practice different ways of responding to cravings, stress, and difficult emotions. You return home outside of treatment hours, allowing you to remain connected to your everyday environment.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

IOP offers a significant amount of treatment while allowing you to live at home. Sessions take place throughout the week and may include individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric services, and other interventions. IOP can be particularly useful when you need more than occasional therapy but still have enough stability to manage portions of your life outside the program.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment provides a less intensive option for adults who can maintain their daily routines while attending scheduled treatment. You may participate in a variety of services while continuing to work, care for family, or manage other responsibilities. Outpatient treatment can also provide continued care as you move forward after completing a more intensive program.

Therapies Used in Alcohol Addiction Treatment

Alcohol treatment is not only about stopping drinking. It is also about understanding what keeps the pattern going and developing other ways to handle the situations that once led you back to alcohol.

Depending on your needs, treatment may incorporate:

Through CBT, clients can examine the thoughts and behaviors that often surround their drinking and recognize patterns that may contribute to alcohol use. Therapy can also help them develop different responses to triggers, stress, and situations where they may be tempted to drink.

For people who turn to alcohol when emotions become overwhelming, DBT can provide practical skills for managing distress without relying on drinking. Clients may work on emotional regulation, impulse control, communication, and other skills that can make difficult moments easier to navigate.

Rather than trying to push away every uncomfortable thought or feeling, ACT teaches clients to acknowledge these experiences and decide how they want to respond. This can be especially helpful for people with AUD who have used alcohol to escape anxiety, sadness, anger, or other forms of emotional discomfort.

One-on-one sessions give clients the privacy to take an honest look at their relationship with alcohol and the circumstances surrounding it. With a therapist, they can explore personal experiences, identify triggers, address underlying concerns, and work toward goals that reflect what they want their lives to look like without alcohol controlling their choices.

Group Therapy:

Sharing experiences with others can help clients recognize that they are not alone in the challenges associated with AUD. Group sessions provide a setting to discuss cravings, setbacks, relationships, and other recovery concerns while learning from different perspectives and practicing healthier ways of responding.

Family Therapy:

Alcohol addiction can affect spouses, children, parents, and other loved ones, often changing communication and creating tension within the family. Family therapy can help address these effects, improve communication, establish healthier boundaries, and give loved ones a better understanding of what recovery from AUD involves.

Holistic Therapies:

Approaches such as music therapy, yoga, Reiki, movement therapy, acupuncture, fitness and nutrition, meditation, art therapy, and adventure therapy can complement traditional addiction treatment. These services give clients additional ways to manage stress, reconnect with their physical well-being, express difficult emotions, and experience activities that do not revolve around alcohol.

Treatment for Alcohol Addiction and Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions

Alcohol use and mental health concerns often become intertwined. Someone may drink to quiet anxiety, numb painful memories, manage depression, or escape overwhelming thoughts, while prolonged alcohol use can also make these symptoms harder to manage. When depression, anxiety, trauma, or another mental health condition occurs alongside alcohol addiction, treating both concerns during dual diagnosis treatment can help address the reasons drinking became difficult to control rather than focusing solely on alcohol use.

Do I Need Alcohol Detox Before Starting Treatment?

Not everyone needs detox before beginning an alcohol treatment program, but suddenly stopping alcohol can be dangerous for people who have developed physical dependence. Withdrawal can sometimes involve serious complications, particularly after heavy or prolonged drinking. Before stopping alcohol on your own, speak with a qualified medical professional about whether you need medically supervised withdrawal management and what the safest next step would be.

Does Insurance Cover Alcohol Rehab in Massachusetts?

Insurance coverage for alcohol use disorder treatment is available through many health plans, but your specific benefits, deductibles, copays, and other out-of-pocket expenses will vary. Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, many health plans that offer mental health and substance use disorder benefits must provide coverage requirements that are generally comparable to those for medical and surgical care. Newton Recovery Center works with many major insurance plans, making it easier to understand your options before taking the next step.

Insurance Accepted at Newton Recovery Center

Newton Recovery Center works with many major insurance plans, including Aetna, TRICARE, Carelon, Magellan, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Our admissions team will verify your benefits for free and walk you through your coverage before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Know If I Have an Alcohol Use Disorder?

An alcohol use disorder may be present when drinking becomes difficult to control and continues despite negative consequences. Repeated attempts to cut back, strong cravings, withdrawal symptoms, or problems involving your health, relationships, work, or responsibilities can all be reasons to seek a professional assessment.

Since each person is different, there is no universal timeline for alcohol rehab. The length of treatment can depend on the level of care, severity of alcohol use, co-occurring concerns, progress, and your ongoing needs.

Depending on your treatment program and schedule, you may be able to continue working while receiving care. Outpatient and intensive outpatient programs are designed to allow participants to return home and maintain some everyday responsibilities outside of treatment.

The cost of alcohol treatment can depend on your insurance plan, the services you receive, and your specific benefits. Newton Recovery Center works with most insurance providers and can review your coverage with you before treatment begins. Our admissions team can help you understand which services may be covered and what expenses you may need to plan for.

Can Alcohol Addiction Be Treated on an Outpatient Basis?

Yes. Some people can receive effective alcohol addiction treatment while living at home. The appropriate level depends on factors such as your drinking pattern, withdrawal risk, mental health, daily functioning, and treatment history.

Treatment may involve individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, holistic interventions, education about alcohol use, coping skills, and work on the factors that contribute to drinking. Your care plan will depend on your circumstances and the level of treatment you enter.

Newton Recovery Center’s treatment programs are focused on ongoing mental health and substance use treatment rather than providing medical alcohol detox. Because alcohol withdrawal can be medically serious, speak with a healthcare professional about safe withdrawal management before stopping alcohol.

This place was an amazing time I was here for two weeks, the only complaint I have is that dinner was not very good, breakfast and lunch was typically amazing. They have their own food truck, mental health groups were small sizes and personalized to your needs.

The Recovery Team (TRT) is a great place overall. It is what you make of it. You put in the work the place will put back into you. Patience is a key to success at TRT. Lean on the staff. They will go out their way their way for you if you go out the way for yourself. Be sure to make sure you get everything in writing from admissions. Admissions will over sale. But when you walk into the place it will take some adjustments but it can feel like home. Good luck to you in your recovery.
