Newton Recovery Center

Rehab Programs in Massachusetts

Finding the right treatment can feel overwhelming, especially when substance use and mental health concerns have begun affecting everyday life. Newton Recovery Center offers rehab programs in Massachusetts with several outpatient options for adults facing these challenges.

Our Newton programs include day treatment, an intensive outpatient program, and outpatient treatment, allowing care to begin at a level that fits your needs and change as recovery moves forward.

Our Rehab Programs in Massachusetts

Treatment at Newton Recovery Center includes clinically backed therapies and wellness services designed to address the different factors that can affect recovery. The appropriate level of care can depend on substance use, mental health concerns, past treatment experiences, daily responsibilities, and the stability of your home environment.

With day treatment, IOP, and outpatient care available, adults can access the intensity of treatment that fits their circumstances. As progress is made or needs shift, the treatment team can reassess the plan and recommend changes when appropriate.

Day Treatment

Day treatment offers a more intensive outpatient schedule for adults who need frequent clinical care. Clients spend a significant portion of the day participating in treatment before returning home or to another appropriate living environment.

The additional treatment time allows clients to focus on substance use, emotional health, coping skills, relationships, and other concerns that may be difficult to address through occasional appointments.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides consistent treatment while allowing clients to maintain more of their regular routines. IOPs can address cravings, triggers, emotional regulation, relapse prevention, relationships, and mental health concerns. Because clients continue living outside treatment, they can begin applying new skills to situations that arise in everyday life.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment provides the most flexibility of the three levels. Clients attend scheduled services while continuing to live at home and manage many of their usual responsibilities. Outpatient care can serve as an entry point for people whose needs do not require intensive treatment. It can also provide continued care after day treatment or IOP is completed.

Substance Use and Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Substance use does not always happen in isolation. Alcohol or drugs may become a way of coping with stress, painful experiences, anxiety, depression, trauma, or other emotional difficulties, while ongoing substance use can pose additional challenges. This overlap is often referred to as dual diagnosis, or having both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 21 million adults in the United States experienced a co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder in 2024.

Newton Recovery Center treats substance use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health concerns. When these concerns occur together, treatment can consider how they affect one another rather than addressing each issue separately. This can help clients recognize patterns, understand potential triggers, and develop healthier alternatives to substance use.

What to Expect During Treatment

At our rehab programs in Massachusetts, the process begins with learning more about what an individual has been experiencing and identifying the type of care that may be best suited to their specific needs.

Treatment may include:

Initial Assessment

Our team reviews your substance use, mental health, treatment history, current circumstances, and goals.

Individual Therapy:

One-on-one sessions provide space to discuss personal concerns and work toward treatment goals.

Group Therapy:

Group sessions allow clients to learn new skills, discuss common challenges, and hear different perspectives.

Family Involvement:

Family services may help address communication, relationships, boundaries, and other concerns that can affect recovery.

Psychiatric Services:

Psychiatric care can address mental health symptoms and help determine whether additional clinical services may be appropriate.

Medication Management:

Medication may be incorporated into treatment when clinically appropriate.

Clinical and Holistic Services:

Evidence-based interventions and wellness-focused offerings can address different aspects of a person’s physical and emotional well-being.

Ongoing Treatment Planning:

Care can be revisited as progress is made, circumstances change, or different needs emerge.

Evidence-Based and Holistic Care

Newton Recovery Center combines established therapeutic approaches with holistic services. This gives clients opportunities to work on recovery through clinical treatment while also paying attention to emotional and physical well-being.

Depending on the program and individual needs, services may include:

  • Individual Therapy: Private sessions give clients room to discuss substance use, mental health, relationships, and personal goals.
  • Group Therapy: Through group sessions, clients can learn from others, share experiences, and practice new skills in a supportive setting.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This approach examines connections between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to help clients recognize patterns and consider healthier responses.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Clients learn practical techniques for navigating intense emotions, challenging circumstances, and interpersonal difficulties.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): By working with difficult thoughts and feelings, clients can make decisions that are more consistent with their values.
  • Trauma-Focused Therapy: For those affected by trauma, this therapy explores how distressing experiences may continue to influence emotions, behaviors, and relationships.
  • Yoga and Meditation: These practices can create opportunities to slow down, focus on the present, and develop greater awareness of physical and emotional experiences.
  • Art and Music Therapy: Creative activities give clients another way to express emotions, explore experiences, and communicate what may be difficult to put into words.
  • Fitness and Nutrition Services: Attention to movement, nutrition, and healthy habits can help clients care for their physical well-being during recovery.
  • Complementary Services: When appropriate and available, acupuncture and Reiki may complement other clinical and wellness services.

Developing Skills for Everyday Life

Recovery extends beyond therapy sessions, as clients eventually return to the stress, relationships, responsibilities, and unexpected situations of everyday life. Treatment can help them recognize triggers, manage cravings, navigate difficult emotions, communicate more effectively, and make choices that align with their recovery.

When familiar circumstances challenge progress, clients have an opportunity to reflect on what happened, understand what contributed to it, and consider healthier ways to respond moving forward.

Family and Relationships

Substance use can affect an entire household. Loved ones may feel worried, frustrated, hurt, or uncertain about how to help. When appropriate, family involvement can give loved ones an opportunity to better understand addiction and recovery while addressing communication or relationship concerns. It can also help families establish healthier boundaries without taking responsibility for someone else’s recovery.

Ultimately, the role of family varies depending on the client and circumstances. Your treatment team can discuss whether family involvement may be beneficial.

Choosing the Right Level of Care

It is common to wonder whether you need the most intensive program available or whether a less intensive option would be enough. There is no universal answer.

Our knowledgeable team may consider:

  • How frequently and heavily substances are being used
  • The effect substance use has on daily life
  • Mental health symptoms
  • Previous treatment experiences
  • Current living circumstances
  • Available family or community support
  • Work, school, or caregiving responsibilities
  • Your current treatment goals

It is important to note that a more intensive program is not a punishment or a sign of failure. It simply provides more treatment time when that is what someone needs. Furthermore, moving to IOP or outpatient care does not mean recovery is finished. Stepping down can allow a person to continue receiving professional care while gradually resuming more independence.

Balancing Rehab With Work and Family

One advantage of outpatient treatment is the ability to remain connected to everyday life. Depending on the program and your clinical needs, you may be able to continue working, attending school, caring for children, or managing other responsibilities.

At the same time, treatment requires time and attention. Your schedule should be realistic enough to allow you to participate fully in care. During the admissions process, you can discuss your responsibilities and learn what each level requires. This can help you make a decision based on both your clinical needs and circumstances.

When More Intensive Care May Be Appropriate

Outpatient treatment is not the right setting for every person at every point in recovery. Someone experiencing significant withdrawal concerns, severe psychiatric symptoms, medical complications, or an unsafe living situation may require a higher level of care.

If your needs exceed what an outpatient program can provide, the clinical team can discuss appropriate alternatives. Sometimes a more comprehensive setting is what allows someone to become stable enough to continue recovery in an outpatient environment.

Understanding how treatment will be paid for can ease some of the uncertainty that comes with reaching out for care. Newton Recovery Center works with insurance providers, and many plans offer benefits for substance use and mental health treatment.

Coverage varies by insurance plan, and factors such as deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and prior authorization may affect your out-of-pocket costs. Our admissions team can verify your benefits and help you understand what your plan may cover before you begin treatment.

You do not need to determine your level of care before making the first call. That is part of what the assessment process is designed to help with. The admissions team can answer questions about programs, discuss your circumstances, and help verify your insurance. A clinical assessment can then provide a clearer picture of which level of treatment may be appropriate.

If you are exploring treatment for someone you love, you can also contact the center to learn more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Rehab Programs Does Newton Recovery Center Offer?

Newton Recovery Center offers day treatment, an intensive outpatient program, and outpatient treatment at its Newton facility. Programs provide different levels of treatment intensity for adults experiencing substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns.

PHP, or Partial Hospitalization Program, generally involves the greatest amount of treatment time among these outpatient levels. IOP provides frequent treatment with more flexibility, while traditional outpatient care involves fewer scheduled treatment hours.

Many insurance plans provide benefits for substance use and mental health treatment, although coverage varies. Newton Recovery Center can help verify your benefits and explain what your plan may cover.

How Do I Know Which Level of Care I Need?

An assessment can help determine which program is most appropriate. The clinical team considers your substance use, mental health, treatment history, home environment, daily responsibilities, and other factors.

Many people can continue working while attending outpatient treatment, particularly at the IOP or outpatient level. Whether this is realistic for you depends on your schedule and clinical needs.

This place was an amazing time I was here for two weeks, the only complaint I have is that dinner was not very good, breakfast and lunch was typically amazing. They have their own food truck, mental health groups were small sizes and personalized to your needs.

The Recovery Team (TRT) is a great place overall. It is what you make of it. You put in the work the place will put back into you. Patience is a key to success at TRT. Lean on the staff. They will go out their way their way for you if you go out the way for yourself. Be sure to make sure you get everything in writing from admissions. Admissions will over sale. But when you walk into the place it will take some adjustments but it can feel like home. Good luck to you in your recovery.
